John Steinbeck gave her the name “Mother Road” in his novel “The Fruits of Wrath”, which was made into the first classic “Road Movie” by John Ford in 1940. The legendary Highway 66 connected Chicago with Los Angeles and was probably the most famous and important highway in the United States until the construction of the interstates that ran almost parallel to the 66. Countless people used it in the 20s to 70s, be it to seek their luck in the "Golden West", be it to escape the forces of nature in the form of long-term sandstorms in Oklahoma or as a sun-hungry tourist on the way to California. Today there are only a few hundred miles of the original 66, motels are closed or completely derelict, as are countless gas stations, whose disused gas pumps are still rusting as silent witnesses of the past. Our search for these remnants of a bygone era takes you along Historic Route 66 to Western America, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Based on John Ford's classic film, we deliberately kept the photos in black and white to reflect a piece of Route 66 history.
