Koalas are not bears, they belong to those marsupials whose offspring are born immature and continue to develop under the protection of the pouch. The cute little animals used to be widespread in Australia, but were hunted and almost exterminated for their fur. Today the koala, which sleeps up to twenty hours a day, is the most widespread symbol of Australia alongside the kangaroo.
