Riga is the capital of Latvia and belongs to the Baltic States. With around 700,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the Baltic States. Riga is an old Hanseatic city and famous for its beautiful old town and its Art Nouveau buildings. Downtown Riga was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. In 2014, Riga was the European Capital of Culture.
