Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia, is located on the Danube and is the largest city in the country with around 423,000 inhabitants. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783 and 1848, and the capital of the (first) Slovak Republic from 1939 to 1945. In 1968 Bratislava became the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic in the CSSR. Since 1993 it has been the capital of the independent state of Slovakia. Until 1919 Bratislava was also known under the German name Pressburg. Most of the historical buildings are now in the picturesque old town - Stare Mesto. Old Town Hall - Stara Radnica from the 14th / 15th centuries Century is one of the oldest preserved houses in the city.
