Sanssouci is a historic castle in Potsdam, near Berlin, built by the Prussian King Frederick the Great as a summer palace and is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. The palace was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747. The name of the palace is a French phrase (sans souci) meaning “without worries” or “carefree”, emphasizing that the palace was intended to be a place of relaxation rather than a seat of power.
