North American Bison

The North American bison is considered THE symbol of Indians and the American West. The Indians used it as a general purpose animal for food and built from the remains of the most diverse items for everyday use. For the white buffalo hunters, however, the Bison skins were a lucrative business until the animals were almost exterminated. Only the creation of Yellowstone National Park was the remaining bison a protection zone and the stock could recover.
