Nida is located on the Curonian Spit in Lithuania. The place belonged to the German Reich until 1919 and between 1939 and 1945 under the name of Nidden. The German writer Thomas Mann (1875–1955) built a house on the mother-in-law mountain and spent the summer months here between 1929 and 1932. The Curonian Spit has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit has been a national park since 1991 (Lithuanian Kurši? Nerijos Nacionalinis Parkas, KNNP).
