Hummingbirds - Flight artists in the rainforest

Hummingbirds live only in South and North America and the Caribbean, most of them in the regions around the equator. The hummingbirds feed mainly on flower nectar. This very high-energy food is what makes the power-sapping flight style possible. The hummingbirds are particularly attracted to striking red or orange flowers. While drinking nectar they can fly on the spot. The hummingbirds' buzzing flight has a frequency of 40-50 wing beats per second and they can even fly sideways or backwards.
