Wismar's city skyline is dominated by massive medieval brick cathedrals. They are St. George's, St. Mary's and St. Nikolai churches. They impressively embody the masterful sacred architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries. The historic buildings, which have been almost completely preserved, give Wismar's old town a striking image of a medieval trading town on the Baltic Sea from the heyday of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century. Wismar is the only Hanseatic city of this size and unity in the southern Baltic Sea region. In 2002 the old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
