Lamu is a center for Swahili culture and a World Heritage Site. It is situated 350 km orth of Mombasa in Kenya. It had its golden age in the 18th century and then came under the political influence of the Sultan of Zanzibar. It's economy was based on slave trade until the abolition in 1907. Since the island has no motorised vehicles, all transportation is done with the help of donkeys of which there are some 3000 donkeys on the island.
